Travel Tuesday--Wellness, Regenerative & Transformational Travel, Plus Spa Secrets from an 87-Year-Old Adventurer
Published 15 days ago • 6 min read
Dear Ageless Traveler,
When I first started traveling in the 1960s, the goal was simple: see as much as possible, as cheaply as possible. Europe on $5 a Day was my bible. I wasn't asking whether the trip would make me healthier or help me find my life purpose.
Today, that's exactly what many of you (and me) who listen to The Ageless Traveler podcast are asking of our travels. Our desire for more healthy years, personal transformation, and giving back is driving the hottest travel trends today.
Each trend has a name: wellness travel, regenerative travel, and transformational travel. I speak about them on cruise ships, and I'm always asked, "Aren't they all the same thing?" No. Here is how I tell them apart.
1. Wellness travel asks, "How do I feel?" The goal is simple: you come home feeling better than when you left. It's about your body, mind, and spirit. Think thermal springs, spa therapies, longevity retreats, healthy cuisine, and finally getting a good night's sleep. (Sleep, by the way, is one of the real keys to longevity.)
2. Regenerative travel asks, "Is this place better because I came?" This is where it goes beyond sustainable travel. Sustainable tourism asks, "How can we reduce the harm tourism causes?" Regenerative tourism asks, "How can tourism actively improve this place and the lives of the people who live here?" Your trip helps restore a farm, a forest, a reef, or a village tradition.
3. Transformational travel asks, "Who will I become?" These are the profound journeys: a pilgrimage like the Camino, a meditation retreat, a solo adventure, a voluntour. You go with intention, keep a journal, and come home changed. Viktor Frankl, whose Man's Search for Meaning I reread often, loved Nietzsche's line: "He who has a why to live for can bear with almost any how." Transformational travel is how many of us find our next why.
So wellness is about you, regenerative is about the place, and transformational is about who you become. The best trips do all three.
In our usual sections this week are devoted to these types of travel, we cover:

Q. What is regenerative travel? I keep hearing about it, but everyone seems to have a different angle.
Julia, Alberta, CANADA
A. The simplest definition: regenerative travel leaves a place better than you found it. Sustainable travel aims to do no harm. Regenerative travel aims to do good.
That might mean staying on a regenerative farm and helping with the harvest. It might mean planting native trees, restoring a hiking trail, or learning a dying craft from a village artisan so it stays alive. It can also be as simple as choosing a lodge that hires locally and puts part of your fee into conservation.
There is no official certification for "regenerative" yet, so be a savvy shopper. Ask three questions: Regenerating what? Measured how? Verified by whom? A real program will have real answers.
And ask what you do while you're there. The best regenerative trips invite you to roll up your sleeves.
News You Can Use
Not All Exercise Is Equal for Your Brain A major review in The Lancet Public Health, covering 74 studies and more than 4.2 million people in 30 countries, found that how you move matters. Leisure-time activity lowered dementia risk: sports, dancing, and the gym by about 24%, and gardening and outdoor walking by 25–36%. Vigorous exercise cut risk by up to 63% compared with being inactive.
It's Not Too Late to Start Exercise A Boston University study of more than 1,500 Framingham Heart Study participants, published in JAMA Network Open, found that being highly active in late life (ages 65–88) was linked to 41% lower dementia risk. Lead researcher Phillip Hwang says it simply: "Finding ways to be more active and moving around is important."
How Old Are Your Cells, Really? Researchers at Sweden's Karolinska Institute and Stockholm University have built a tool called Pasta. It reads gene activity to calculate a cell's biological age. It was trained on more than 17,000 tissue samples and can spot substances that speed up or slow down cellular aging. Expect to see biological age testing at more longevity spas soon.
Culture Vulturing Around the World
I had the privilege of speaking at HD Design Conference on Longevity Design for Spas and Hotels. Here are some wellness experiences that are top of the line... not budget, but they are value for the money.
Corvas Brinkerhoff has created a 20,000-square-foot bathhouse that blends immersive art with ancient thermal bathing traditions and neuroscience. Its scientific advisors include experts from Johns Hopkins and UC San Francisco. "I wondered if immersive art could make people feel good," he says. Art and hot water? Count me in.
Zoey Gong bridges Western nutrition and traditional Chinese medicine through food therapy, herb tours, and cooking classes. "I want people to start incorporating TCM in their everyday lives and understand their body more," she says. It's a perfect learning journey for the curious traveler.
Founded in 1940, Rancho La Puerta is one of the original destination spas. It offers hiking, fitness classes, organic gardens, and cooking school, all just over the border from San Diego. Look for its seasonal specials. The founder is named Deborah Szekely and is 104 years old.
Wellness Close to MY Home: Desert Hot Springs, California Some of my favorite wellness is in my own backyard. The natural mineral springs of Desert Hot Springs, near Palm Springs, offer spa soaking at a fraction of resort prices. Historic Two Bunch Palms is the splurge. Smaller spa motels nearby deliver the same healing waters for much less.
Regenerative: Earthwatch Expeditions Join real scientists on field research, from counting wildlife to monitoring ecosystems. You'll travel with purpose, learn from experts, and your work feeds real conservation.

Dear Ageless Traveler, True confession: I like to shop when I travel and get pleasure out of counting how many countries I’m wearing! Shoes from Italy, jewelry from India, a hat from Ecuador. I cringed when I heard that Swedish Death Cleaning was a thing. Purging stuff to organize your closet is great, as is getting rid of junk so your family doesn’t have to. But that doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to acquire good new stuff at a great price and have some retail therapy. What's Left of A...
Dear Ageless Traveler, River cruising may be the perfect way for those of us over 60 to see the world. Your ship docks right in the heart of town, steps from the cathedral, the market, or the museum. And on board, the scenery comes to you while you sip coffee on deck. This week’s Travel Tuesday is about matching the river to your mobility, whether you hike ten miles, walk with a cane, or travel with a wheelchair. Ask the right questions, and there is a river trip that fits you. There is...
Dear Ageless Traveler, Everyday someone says to me "I can't travel because I have a pet." Or, "I have an older pet and I am afraid to travel with them or board them." I too wonder if my travel life allows for pet ownership. I have always had a pet. There was Sabra, my poodle, when I was twelve. Then there were Gilbert and Sullivan, the two cats who shared my life for 23 years. And there were my last two dogs, Brigit the elkhound and Cheerio the Springer spaniel. You may notice that I end my...
