Ask Adriane

Q. I was very intrigued with your article on barge boat cruising in BottomLine. The article features only European cruising. Are you aware of any in this country?

Peter via Email

A. I am glad you enjoyed the article on barging in Europe. The closest thing to European canal barging in the United States is the historic Erie Canal system in New York State, where travelers can rent slow-moving canal boats and cruise through locks and storybook villages at five miles per hour. eriecanaladventures.com

The Champlain Canal – New York is a quieter extension of the Erie Canal.

  • Runs from the Hudson River north to Lake Champlain
  • Narrow canal with historic lock systems
  • Scenic farmland and small villages

Please download the free eBook I wrote for the The Ageless Traveler podcast audience, which includes barging and other water trips.

I’d love to hear where you finally barges. Send me a text or a voicemail.

Here are a few barging trips in Canada:

Trent–Severn Waterway – Ontario, Canada

The best true canal cruising system in North America.

  • 240-mile inland waterway across Ontario
  • Historic locks, including the famous boat elevator lift locks
  • Small charter boats and houseboats available

Stops include towns like Peterborough, Bobcaygeon, and Georgian Bay.

Rideau Canal – Ottawa to Kingston, Canada

UNESCO-level historic canal.

  • 125 miles of connected lakes and canals
  • Hand-operated locks are still used today
  • Self-drive houseboats available

Stops include:

  • Ottawa
  • Merrickville
  • Kingston

News You Can Use

Exercise for Exercisers

Here is some good news: A major study published by the National Library of Medicine tracked 74,000 adults and found that intensity changes everything. One minute of vigorous activity can be equivalent to four to nine minutes of moderate activity and up to 156 minutes of light activity in terms of mortality risk.

To exercise for travel, consider “functional exercises.” These exercises are not just for building muscle; they also help us lift luggage, carry souvenirs, and build travel stamina, and you don’t need a gym.

  • Squats fire up the biggest muscles in your lower body, all anchored to the hips and femur, prime spots for bone loss.
  • Deadlifts strengthen hips and lower back, critical for resilient aging.
  • Push-ups. Start with knee push-ups, then push-ups, then dumbbell presses, and finally a barbell bench press. Strong pushing muscles are practical muscles. Luggage. Doors. Grandchildren.
  • Pick up heavy weights and walk. Grip strength and skeletal loading in one move.

Traveling for Health at Day Spas: Bone Exercises and Dry Floating

Have you heard of dry floating systems? They are beds at spas (you pay for treatment as you would for a massage). You lie in sensory-reduced environment to reduce stress, improve sleep, and calm inflammation. While the research is still evolving, stress reduction is known to support cardiovascular and immune health.

Sound bathing (which cured my back) uses the sound of “singing bowls” played by experts, along with certain music, bells, and other sounds, while you lie or sit comfortably. Some practitioners even emanate the sounds while you are in a swimming pool. The way it seems to work to heal is that sounds move the water in your body, and we are over 90 percent water. Will it work for you? One short test is to listen to loud music if you have pain and see if the pain changes in level. If it does, sound may be a protocol that affects you enough to be useful.

Longevity Wrap-Up

Vigorous exercise produces outsized benefits because it stimulates:

  • Greater mitochondrial biogenesis (more energy-producing capacity)
  • Higher mechanical tension and muscle fiber recruitment
Improved cardiac output and vascular elasticity
  • Metabolic flexibility—your ability to flip between fuel sources
  • Hormetic stress (challenges that trigger the body’s repair and resilience systems to come back stronger) up-regulates cellular repair and resilience pathways linked to healthy aging.

Culture Vulturing Around the World

Brittany, France

As you know, I have been studying where I might want to buy a home in Europe. Husband is against it, so we shall see. But I have landed on a surprising area because I feel there are health benefits. I want to share the area and explain my criteria.

Brittany in northwestern France boasts cobblestone villages, fresh-food markets, music, street life, and access to the U.K. via ferries and to the rest of Europe by train. A TRAIN TO Paris takes two hours, Rennes airport 50 minutes by car, with direct flights to Italy, Spain, and the U.K., among other destinations. The villages are walkable, and the temperature is cool in the summer when I want to be there.

Cultural sights I visited in 2024 on a road trip from Toulouse to the Ferry to the UK

Start in Saint-Malo, the historic walled port city where you can walk the ramparts overlooking the English Channel. The old town streets, rebuilt after World War II, are full of cafés and maritime history.

Travel west to Mont-Saint-Michel, the extraordinary abbey rising from the sea. Technically just across the Normandy border, it is one of France's most visited cultural landmarks and an unforgettable medieval pilgrimage site.

Continue to Dinan, one of Brittany’s most beautiful preserved towns, with half-timbered houses, stone streets, and a dramatic medieval castle overlooking the Rance River.

In Rennes, Brittany’s capital, explore the Parlement de Bretagne building, art museums, and one of the best Saturday markets in France at Marché des Lices.

Visit Carnac, famous for its mysterious prehistoric stone alignments. Thousands of standing stones stretch across fields, older than Stonehenge, and still not fully explained.

Head to the Pink Granite Coast near Perros-Guirec, where enormous rose-colored rock formations create surreal coastal landscapes perfect for walking trails and seaside villages.

Finally, explore Quimper, the cultural heart of Breton traditions, with a Gothic cathedral, pottery workshops, and traditional Breton music and festivals.

Britany for health: My Checklist for longer-term renting or buying:

  • Does the temperature jive with what feels good to me?
  • Can I learn the language so I have friends?
  • Are the people of the community open to recruits?
  • Is the food fresh and available to buy daily?
  • Is the area walkable?
  • Is it near other areas I want to visit?
  • What are the cultural and culinary experiences like?
  • Are there other expats? Even though I will be using only short stays, it is great to have locals from the U.S. and the U.K.
  • Can I afford it?
  • Does Stuart like it?… But that’s my problem.

Luxury Travel for Less

One HUGE travel trend is wellness travel, with new facilities that are blending cutting-edge medical science with ancient healing traditions.

This shift signifies a move toward holistic healthcare that prioritizes both technological innovation and deep environmental harmony. I travelled to Bangkok for my health tests, and one test saved me from an incorrect diagnosis of kidney disease. Wow. I also love the healing and relaxation rituals. BUT… It’s expensive

Thank heaven for competition, prices are getting lower, and I make wellness travel part of my healthcare budget. For example, Sec-He in Palm Springs, run by the Agua Caliente Cultural Center features mineral springs, a salt room for better breathing, meditation lounges, zero gravity, a world-class gym, and extra for cryonics… freezing exposure, and no extra for cold plunges, steam, sauna, and much more.

Six Senses London at The Whiteley (United Kingdom): This is the brand’s first outpost in the U.K. and will feature a dedicated longevity-focused medical clinic

Clinique La Prairie (Amaala, Saudi Arabia, and Phuket, Thailand): Known for its focus on living longer and healthier,

Mailena Wellness Resort (Mexico): Located on the Baja California shoreline, this resort will house a state-of-the-art Wellness and Longevity Center.

Tulåh Clinical Wellness Sanctuary (India): Situated in Kerala, this sanctuary represents a shift toward Western science and integrated holistic healthcare.

Ameyalli Wellbeing Center (Utah, USA): Opening in 2027, this center, led by Deepak Chopra, will pair the “latest tech” with spiritual practices like quantum healing and manifestation workshops,

Phoenix Hotel (Malta): The centrepiece of a wellness journey that looks to the future and honours the past.

Dear Ageless Traveler, Happy Passover and Happy Easter. I find this time of year to be one of renewal. Perhaps it’s the burgeoning of spring, the holidays that bring family together, or the new beginnings of baby chicks and lambs that gives the time an aura of wonder and possibility for me. It’s also a bit disconcerting. The usual joys of travel are dampened by the world situation; in the US and worldwide, problems like homelessness and hunger persist. Yet it’s heartening to discover that one...

Dear Ageless Traveler, This has been two weeks of “FIRSTS.” I've just returned from a stint as a cruise ship speaker for the first time. I also visited the Azores for the first time, and below in Luxury Travel for Less, you'll discover that a quick trip can become a Wellness experience. It was also the first time that an airline lost my luggage. This was no joke as I was slated to speak on the ship four times and wanted to look my best. In News You Can Use, you'll see how I managed and a few...
